Slumdog Millionaire is a well-crafted tale of an orphan boy, Jamal, born in a slum in India. He is selected to be a contestant on India’s television game show “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” and his life story is recollected in episodes relevant to the the questions asked of him on the show. In these episodes Jamal’s life is revealed and most prominently, the profound relationship with his tough older brother Salim. The relationship between childhood friend, and later love, Latika, weaves its way in and out of the story and serves to be the main motivation for Jamal’s every move, including his appearance on the game show. The hardships of Jamal’s life are lightened by the infusion of humorous incidents and characters throughout the movie. The good spirit and sincerity of Jamal’s character also lifts the movie into a virtuous story of hopefulness, brotherhood, and love.
Director Danny Boyle and co-director Loveleen Tandan create unforgettable scenes that will make you laugh out loud or tense up in anticipation. Based on the book “Q and A” by Vikras Swarup, the movie is a visual treat that beautifully captures a gritty and expansive India; from trash sites to train rides to call centers. It is delightful to watch the youth phase of Jamal’s life as the young cast is so fresh and vibrant. Jamal’s undeniable good will and determination is carried with him in his every step. From earning an autograph of his idol to winning over his love, Jamal always gets what he seeks out in the end. His ability to overcome his unfortunate circumstances and several setbacks, he is a universal champion of the spirit that everyone will be rooting for by the end of the movie.
