When I was younger, I wanted a pair of Nikes. I forget which pair but I remembered the swoosh and the slap my grandmom gave me across the face when I went into a temper tandrum just for a pair of sneakers. I settled for a pair of Etonics.
I present to you Mike Leavitt, a blue-collar practioner of what art critics called “Outside Art,” and a portion of his cardboard sneaker series. If only he and his boxed art was around when I got “latino-slapped” by my abuelita.
Side Note: Mike Leavitt’s homemade creations will be in the Great Gotham City, Fuse Gallery, from March 21st till April 18th. Click here for my info, ninja!
