Big June Interviews Rontronik

Greetings Blacren/Big June enthusiast, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty then shall we?. I wanted to do this huge piece about the DJ’s of Blacren, I salivated over the thought of a bigger project and increasing the variety of the type of articles I add to the Blacren rooster. I was submerged in my own fantasy of doing a series and drifting yet further from the title of blogster and closer to the moniker Journalist. I wanted to leave a mark on this damn E-zine and show the world that this form of writing is in deed as valid as anything in print.

The First interview went well:
I interviewed Dj Duane Harriot and it went great. I’m thinking “hell yeah, move over Ted Koppel, there is a new Pen in the ink, but what had happened was: I got a text from The almighty Powerful Setty Mac a.k.a. Mr. Blacren himself. He had already co-signed on the Series but now he’s telling me He loved the first interview, and I’m saying “booya I’m getting a raise bitches”. he wanted my next article to pay homage to one of the Dj’s that really contributed in a large portion to what you see as Blacren today. He Mentioned Rontronik.

Who is Rontronik?:
I will admit I never paid much mind to Ron. I mean, he’s usually the resident Dj when Blacren has one if it’s soiree’s at our favorite watering hole [Botanica Bar]. Usually when I seen Ron he’s too busy to chat, he’s keeping the crowd hyped up on his own version of Hip hop infused techno. I will admit some of the blends fawked my head because you don’t usually hear that style of hip hop mixed with techno but I’ll be damned if I wasn’t bobbing my head (pause). Ron never said much to me either I guess technically he was working and during those times he never said much to anyone except his jam partner Gunseller who usually takes over when he needs a break. For the record Gunseller has a slightly different style but when the two of them DJ together, you actually forget that there is a DJ, and your just feeling the music and the vibe that has been created.

The Second Interview:
I had Ron’s card and I had planned on interviewing him at some point but my plan was to save his for last. I heard of his accomplishments, Usher’s Art Director to name a few and I wanted to make his article the grand finale. I told Setty and although he is very supportive of my particular style of writing I know that he is also very non-confrontational. So Long story short Setty agreed to let me save Ron for last. Ron contributed a lot to Blacren and had one of the most interesting stories, I just wanted to build and arc. Remember I’m trying to be the next Ted Koppel at this point. The interesting thing is that every single Dj that I contacted to feature in the next interview was unable to meet with me, for one odd reason or another, either the schedules couldn’t match up, or this one is out-of-town, one guy actually said to me “I don’t think I am ready for an interview, I’d rather you contact me when I have more going on, why don’t you try Ron.” It all could have been coincidence, or divine intervention,  but the way everything happened and in that sequence, it started to seem like a conspiracy. I mean I know that the Blacren circle is close but me being the newest member (and a loner), I guess I didn’t really see how close. The Moral of that story is: “when Setty speaks, you will listen, one way or the other.”  The thing is, I knew that once I interviewed Ron I would not want to do anymore interviews, and my DJ series would’ve consisted of only two DJ’s. I started to feel like my master plan was starting to unravel. No more Ted Koppel, no more Pulitzer (clearly this was a highly evolved fantasy).

So, I called Ron and we scheduled a meet, I found him to be very pleasant and very professional. He sent me to some high-rise condo with a concierge on the east side of Manhattan. The kind of place you would expect to see Sherman Hemsley cursing out wheezy or fox trotting around Mr Bentley (RIP Sherm). Once I circumvented the gatekeeper, I was directed upstairs to a floor that I can’t remember (because I was too captivated by the amazing paneling in the elevator). I rang the buzzer, the door opened up and I was expecting to see a Marla Gibbs type housekeeper hop out with some witty banter about how I need to hurry in before I wind up getting to first base with the doorbell.

Once inside what I saw was very different from what I imagined. I saw a father and a loving husband who although very dedicated to perusing his passion, never forgot what matters most. I saw a man who was an innovator, and a visionary ahead of his time. I saw Black Renaissance, the essence of Blacren living and breathing and chatting about the evolution of DJ-ing while I sipped on what I presumed to be some expensive ass water.
