So today was the day I’d been looking forward to as major fan of the original Evil Dead, all of the previews look great and it’s co-signed by the creator (Sam Raimi). What could go wrong? Well I’ll tell you.
Overhyped! The movie overall was a good remake and a decent addition to the current state of the horror genre but it doesn’t live up to the Hollywood hype machine. Then again, what movie does these days? Let’s look at the checklist:
Nods to the original? Check.
Great effects/gore. (mega) Check.
Updated story? Check (and maybe a bit better in the sense of why they’re at the cabin in the first place).
“The Most Terrifying Film You Will Ever Experience”? Not at all. In fact I would say less than the original (when it was released in 1983). This is where disappointment resonates. Other reviews were speaking of audiences walking out and fainting due to the horror, I find this very hard to believe. However Let me be clear, I’m not saying that it wasn’t “scary.” But the trailer was scarier by far. In fact the scariest part of the movie was watching a couple bring their toddler in for a viewing of this hard-R rated gore fest God bless America.
It’ll be interesting to see what the Director’s Cut will be like. Let’s hope for the best.
