After the hearing the disappointing reviews for Ang Lee’s version of the Hulk I was a bit skeptical about them reinventing an already damaged franchise. From the opening title sequence I knew Marvel was taking the Hulk in the right direction, one that represents earlier parts of the comic and the television series that made it so popular.
Critics complained of the Hulk being a mindless savage and the story one dimensional. Marvel merely stuck with the formula that made the Hulk one of it’s most revered characters for decades.
Veering off the path into Hollywood script rewrites and maneuverings would’ve been disastrous for Marvel. As for Roger Ebert calling the Hulk “one of the lesser creatures in the Marvel Comics stable” shows his lack of knowledge when it comes to comic book history. The Hulk is one of the founders of Marvel’s Super team the Avengers (nicely set up at the end of the movie), His character also paved the way for the X-Mens’ Wolverine to make his first appearance in The Incredible Hulk 180 and 181.
What Marvel is doing now what is what they should have done from the beginning, handle their own shit.
On a scale of 1-5
John Favreau’s interpretation of the Iron Avenger is a welcomed addition to the comic book movie genre.
Iron Man was action packed and provided enough humor to play down the intensity at the right moments. Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark was dead on, he’s clearly the perfect choice to play the billionaire playboy.
His comedic timing and command of dialogue is why Downey is one the great actors of our generation.
The special effects and closing credits were some of the best i’ve seen in awhile, think Retro-Tron Steeze.
- 5stars (based on scale of 1 to 5 / 1=worst / 5=best)
• best casting i’ve seen in a long time in terms of comic-book-based movies
• great dialogue (hits all the marks — great balance of humor and seriousness)
• outstanding special fx
• not a big fan of the secret scene at the end of the credits but like it (Avenger Initiative)
